Omaha Mayor John W. Ewing is challenging Omaha residents to help their neighbors in a one-week food drive beginning today (Wednesday, Oct. 29).
Residents are asked to donate non-perishable food items to designated Omaha community centers (below) from today through next Wednesday, Nov. 5.
Donated items will go to the Food Bank for the Heartland to distribute to its pantry network.
The city is conducting this drive to address anticipated food shortages given federal cutbacks earlier this year and the pausing of SNAP benefits.
“Too many Omahans are facing food insecurity right now, ”Mayor Ewing said. “We will do whatever we can to help feed our neighbors. I ask fellow Omahans to dig into their wallets and kitchen cupboards to help, and we will do our part as a city.”
The city also is doing the following:
1) Donating $45,000 in keno funds to Food Bank for the Heartland
2) Encouraging Omahans to give to their neighbors through funds set up at the Omaha Community Foundation and United Way of the Midlands. Such funds will be distributed to pantries. Omahans are also welcomed to donate to the Food Bank for the Heartland or charity of their choice.
